CARAVAGGIO & BERNINI: Baroque Stars in the Kunsthistorische Museum Vienna
Baroque Stars are currently brightening up Vienna’s winterly sky! In the Kunsthistorische Musem Vienna a world full of fascinating works filled with drama, intensive passion and strong movement is waiting for you. And the best thing is: the once in a lifetime exhibition Caravaggio & Bernini – the Discovery of Emotions is included in the Vienna PASS!
For the first time, this extraordinary exhibition brings together the phenomenal works of two great artists – Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) and Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), the sculptor and architect of St. Peter’s Square. Selected artworks of their successors are also on display. Around seventy major works promise new perspectives on the flourishing Baroque era in Rome.
An overwhelming visual Baroque play with masterpieces of Roman painting and sculpture will leave you speechless. With their focus to the nature and the pathos of great emotions, these masterpieces bring Rome of those days alive. Make sure to take a close look at the special tricks the artists used to depict affectations and trigger emotions: complex poses, facial expressions and looks, as well as light, colour and moving garments.
The exhibition presents the artists most famous works, such as St. John the Baptist (1602) and Narcissus (1601). A copy of the lost work of Caravaggio Maria Magdalena in Ecstasy (1613) by Louis Finson is also part of the exhibition. The works of Bernini, such as the terracotta sculpture The Ecstasy of St. Teresa of Avila (1647), St. Sebastian (1617) and of course the famous interpretation of the Medusa (1638-1640) in the form of a marble sculpture are there for you to admire.
Can’t wait to reach for the stars? Your Vienna PASS takes you directly to the Baroque Stars in the Kunsthistorische Museum, amongst 60+ other museums and attractions, which will warm up your heart. Top Tip: Hot Punsch at the famous Christmas Markets (one of them right in front of the Kunsthistorische Museum, by the way) might be of help as well! #barockstars
