Where to watch the UEFA EURO Championship in Vienna

June 9, 2016 9:00 am by

The 10th June marks the start of the epic UEFA EURO Championships, held this year in France. The stats? 24 teams, 51 matches in 10 stadiums within one month (June 10th – July 10th) and 1.8 million tickets sold.

For the Austrian National soccer team, it’s a first entry into the European Championships. The last time they played in France was in the 1998 World Championship.

Austria hosted UEFA EURO in 2008, although the team was eliminated at the group stage. If you visit the Austria Wien Football Club Museum there is even an exhibit dedicated to the infancy of the Austrian National Football Team.

If you want to catch the matches whilst you’re in Vienna there are plenty of places and pubs to visit to watch the match on the big screen.

Here are our top picks:

Fan Arena at Vienna City Hall Square

This is the biggest public screening in Vienna and boasts a 100 square meter video wall, where you can see all matches and enjoy the rich culinary offers.
On days with no games, music and concert films will be screened. When soccer fever is over, this area will transform into the traditional Viennese Music Film Festival, screening more music performances during summer.

Strandbar Herrmann & Donaukanal

When strolling along the Danube Canal, watch out for Strandbar Herrmann, which attracts numerous fans during soccer season. The size of the screen is still 23 square meters and the bar offers relaxing beach feeling with beach loungers at the water front.

WUK

At WUK, Vienna’s Cultural Hotspot, you can follow the EURO 2016 matches in the FM4 EM Quartier. A food truck offers refreshments and critical discussion meetings about the commerce and fan culture complete the programme.
